These Beasts: Jesse Treece *Special 9 Part Space 15 Twenty Feature*
This is a 9 part series in collaboration with Urban Outfitters' Space 15 Twenty. Our Origami Girls and Wavy Boys show will be up Feb 16-18, and we're doing free workshops from 11-4 on Saturday & Sunday. We will also be running collage features on their blog and social media.
We first discovered Jesse Treece on Instagram. His collages combine stark architecture, striking figures, and entrancing landscapes to create images that feel both impossible and achievable.
1.) What’s your name?
2.) Where are you from?
3.) Where do you live?
4.) 3 reasons why your life in your city couldn’t happen anywhere else?
1 - All my favorite thrift and used book shops are here.
2 - Pagliacci Pizza.
3 - Scarecrow Video, one of the last and best video stores around.
5.) What kind of work do you do?
I work in health care to pay the bills and make collages by hand to stay sane.
6.) What keeps you inspired?
Movies, books, comics, music, visual art. Also, the books and magazines that I find on thrift hunting trips.
7.) Where do you work?
"Ok, step over here to the desk (watch out for that stack of books on the floor!)...and here are my tools, scissors, exacto, ruler, pen/pencil and eraser. And further ahead on the table is a crazy stack of random clippings just about spilling over the edge. Now step to the right (but watch out for those two giant stacks of page clippings!).." and so on
8.) What is 1 challenge that has defined you for at least one chapter of your life?
When I finished high school I joined the Navy which was complete culture shock for an only child used to having my own space. It was scary and exciting at once and definitely changed my life. I got to travel to some amazing places and I think that still has an influence on the art I make today.
9.) What are some of your favorite snacks, and do you eat them while you work?
I've become addicted to honey melon bubble tea and red bean paste cookies. I rarely eat while working.
