These Beasts: Gabe Islas *Special 9 Part Space 15 Twenty Feature*
This is a 9 part series in collaboration with Urban Outfitters' Space 15 Twenty. Our Origami Girls and Wavy Boys show will be up Feb 16-18, and we're doing free workshops from 11-4 on Saturday & Sunday. We will also be running collage features on their blog and social media.
@endless_revisions first got our attention the same way most collage artists do: via instagram. His bizarre re-workings of vintage imagery offers a native Angeleno's perspective on many of the common themes that form the pillars of Hollywood: beautiful women, vile monsters, suggestive locales, and crisp light. While not outright remixes of existing films, it's not much of a stretch to see how these collages could be the sketchbook of a legendary cult director.
1.) What’s your name?
2.) Where are you from?
I was born in West Covina, but I grew up in various cities within the Inland Empire.
3.) Where do you live?
4.) 3 reasons why your life in your city couldn’t happen anywhere else?
a) I live near some great thrift stores where I can always find source material.
b) I also live near a couple of dispensaries that are open late, where I can always get quality pot at a great price.
c) Living in Pasadena also gives me easy access to the Rose Bowl, which I've ran around many times.
5.) What kind of work do you do?
I mostly stick to analog collage (paper, glue, scissors, xacto), but I've been keeping a drawing journal lately.
6.) What keeps you inspired?
Mostly just listening to music and running, if I can do both of those things regularly, it helps me stay sharp.
7.) Where do you work?
I work at a Trader Joes grocery store here in Pasadena. There's a ramp that leads up to the entrance of the store. You'll be able to smell all the flowers, potted plants and fresh herb plants on your way. As soon as you enter, you'll probably smell even more flowers, mostly cut bouquets and a lot of potted orchids. Past that you'll catch the scent of apples and various citrus fruits in the produce section. Hopefully you don't smell anything in the butcher section because that would mean something's leaking. Then you'll pass the cheese section which will lead you to the demo station where someone is handing out free samples. There's always something different being prepared and depending what time you get there, you might smell fresh coffee brewing. I would take you into the backroom, but you're not authorized to be back there.
8.) What is 1 challenge that has defined you for at least one chapter of your life?
Answering that last question and having to describe the mundane details of how I barely earn a living was very challenging.
9.) What are some of your favorite snacks, and do you eat them while you work?
Currently my favorite snacks are nut butter filled Clif Bars and I eat them at work all the time. I also have a weakness for jalapeno Cheetos, but I don't eat those at work because I wouldn't want people sticking their grubby hands in the bag.
